Mbokazi Attributes Pirates’ MTN8 Comeback to Half-Time Discussion
Mbekezeli Mbokazi, the formidable vice-captain of Orlando Pirates, shared that a pivotal half-time discussion was instrumental in the team’s comeback to secure a draw against Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the MTN8 semifinal.
Pirates fell behind in the first half after Teboho Mokoena’s powerful header at Orlando Stadium. However, they showcased remarkable resilience in the second half, with Mbokazi playing a vital role in setting up the equalizer.
The Sundowns’ tactic of playing deep to create an offside trap was effectively countered by a long ball from Mbokazi.
This pass reached Kamogela Sebelebele, who dashed past the defense and deftly slotted the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to level the score. Following that moment, Abdelsam Ouaddou’s side began to assert dominance, leaving Sundowns to struggle defensively.
“It was definitely a challenging match,” Mbokazi noted.

“The game was demanding, but we kept pushing forward. In our half-time discussion with the coach and technical team, they provided us with the insights we needed to turn the situation around, and we drew motivation from their counsel.”
He emphasized that the team encouraged each other by declaring it “wasn’t over for us.” “We attained the goal through determination. We supported one another in every facet of the match,” he remarked.
The match attracted a full house at the Soweto stadium.
“We are grateful to our fans for showing up in such large numbers, and we hope they will continue to back us as we pursue success,” said Mbokazi, who stepped into the captain’s role in lieu of the injured Nkosinathi Sibisi. “Seeing their passionate turnout inspires us to fight back in this match.”
The Buccaneers, with Mbokazi strengthening the defense, aim to carry their second-half momentum into the upcoming match against Sundowns at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
Pirates are the reigning champions of the MTN8, having claimed the title for the third consecutive year. If they succeed against Sundowns, they will meet the winner of the other semifinal between Sekhukhune United and Stellenbosch in the final on September 13.
