ACSA Issues Full-Scale Emergency Declaration at Cape Town International Airport

Cape Town – Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has announced that it will be conducting its thorough Aerodrome Emergency Exercise today, 19 August 2025, at Cape Town International Airport (CTIA).

“This crucial safety drill, required every two years, is performed in compliance with South African aviation regulations and the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO),” ACSA stated in a release to The Bulrushes.

“The exercise reflects ACSA’s unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and security.

“Its purpose is to evaluate and improve the airport’s readiness for potential disasters, ensuring that all systems, protocols, and personnel are adequately prepared to respond effectively.”

ACSA noted that the large-scale simulation will engage various stakeholders, including the South African Police Service, the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre, Fire and Rescue Service, the South African National Defence Force, Metro Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Traffic Police, and other key partners.

“Members of the public should expect to see increased activity in and around the airport area during the exercise,” the statement observed.

ACSA assured the public that this was a planned simulation, not a real emergency.

“Importantly, normal airport operations will proceed without interruption throughout the exercise,” ACSA confirmed.
