Boxing Showdown: Boks to Face Japan at Wembley Stadium
The Springboks, two-time Rugby World Cup titleholders, are preparing to take on Japan at Wembley Stadium during their November tour, just prior to the official Autumn Nations Series.

This eagerly awaited match is scheduled for 1 November, marking the first rugby event at the prestigious North London venue since 2016, when the Springboks fought to a thrilling 31-31 tie against the Barbarians.
Wembley Stadium, which serves as the home of the England national football team, reopened in 2007 after Chelsea triumphed over Manchester United in the FA Cup final with Didier Drogba’s decisive goal. The stadium also plays host to all major domestic cup finals in England.
The Springboks boast an impressive record in London, having achieved a convincing 41-13 victory against Wales at Twickenham in June 2024 and a dominant 35-7 win over New Zealand at the same location a year prior, just ahead of the Rugby World Cup in France. Moreover, the Boks are set to confront Argentina in the final match of the Rugby Championship on October 4 at Allianz Stadium, a clash expected to garnert significant support from the vibrant South African expatriate community in the UK.
Head coach Rassie Erasmus expressed his enthusiasm for the tour, stating, “We’re thrilled to commence our Northern Hemisphere tour with a match against Japan at the iconic Wembley Stadium. The Brave Blossoms are known for their dynamic and attacking style of play… We have consistently enjoyed tremendous backing from our supporters in the UK, and this game will be no exception.”
Japan’s head coach, Eddie Jones, who was part of the Springboks’ coaching staff during their 2007 Rugby World Cup victory, also expressed his excitement for this clash against the reigning champions.
“For every young Japanese player, facing the Boks is a dream,” Jones noted. “The match in Brighton a decade ago [the ‘Miracle of Brighton’] transformed rugby in Japan from a minor sport into a major phenomenon.”
This match will mark only the fourth encounter between South Africa and Japan, with the Springboks having won the last two games in 2019, following Japan’s historic 34-32 triumph in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Since 1992, Wembley Stadium has hosted 11 rugby matches. After its renovation in 2007, four rugby events have taken place at the venue, including two during the 2015 Rugby World Cup (New Zealand vs. Argentina and Ireland vs. Romania), both drawing nearly 90,000 spectators.
