Possible Mob Justice Suspected After Charred Body Found in Katlehong North Informal Settlement

Scattered remnants of charred corrugated metal and plastic mark the spot where anxious neighbors watched from a distance as Forensic Pathology Services retrieved the burnt remains of a man.
The lifeless body was found by locals beneath the singed corrugated sheets in the Katlehong North informal settlement.
This morning, Wednesday 20 August 2025, firefighters from the Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) at the Thokoza fire station hurried to the scene following urgent calls from the informal settlement, where a makeshift dwelling was engulfed in flames.
The firefighters arrived promptly at 10:15 AM with a Water Tanker fire engine.
Upon reaching the location, they discovered that the flames had already been put out and residents had taken down the makeshift home.
According to DEMS, the deceased, a 35-year-old man, has been identified.
However, his name is currently being withheld.
DEMS reported that the fire likely broke out overnight, with emergency services being notified only this morning.
The police are now investigating the incident, which is believed to be connected to acts of mob justice.
