AEC Sues Sankofa Events, Paul Sinclair, and Hyve Events for Misrepresentation
Johannesburg – The African Energy Chamber (AEC) (www.EnergyChamber.org/) has revealed that Sankofa Events Limited and Paul Sinclair are now part of a legal case concerning alleged misrepresentation, unlawful completion, and deceptive marketing.
The AEC announced that this case will be brought before the High Court in South Africa against Hyve Events SA Limited, Sankofa Events Limited, and Paul Sinclair.
“The Edictal Citation application has been granted, enabling Sankofa Events and Paul Sinclair to participate in proceedings for damages related to misrepresentation, unlawful completion, and false marketing,” declared the AEC.
“This serves as an official legal notice for the respondents, as the court recognizes a strong basis for claims of misrepresentation – a grave accusation with significant ramifications for the African energy sector.
“Sankofa Events Limited and Paul Sinclair are implicated for their involvement in spreading false statements and misleading information regarding the upcoming Africa Oil Week (AOW): Energy conference.”
The AEC noted that the event, which has now relocated to Accra, Ghana, for its 31st edition, has been tainted by numerous misleading statements, press releases, and communications, particularly concerning its participants and discussion topics.
“A significant example involves information disseminated via AOW: Energy’s official communication channels regarding the participation of GEPetrol, Equatorial Guinea’s state-owned oil company,” the AEC explained.
“Details concerning technical presentations, one-on-one meetings, and the promotion of new licenses by the corporation were neither validated nor officially confirmed by GEPetrol.
“Such misrepresentation is designed to entice delegates to attend and does not accurately depict the event itself.”
As a result, the AEC – representing the voice of the African energy industry – is pursuing legal action against Sankofa Events Limited and Paul Sinclair in Ghana from South Africa, acknowledging the significant damages inflicted by this extent of misrepresentation on stakeholders across the continent.
Sankofa Events Limited and Paul Sinclair are required to engage legally in this case as they have been formally included in this important lawsuit.
The respondents have a 30-day window from the date of service in their jurisdiction to respond to the Joinder Application.
This case emerges at a pivotal moment for the African energy industry, highlighting its importance.
Amid global divisions regarding pressing issues like energy transition and hydrocarbon investment, Africa requires a unified voice.
With over 600 million people across the continent lacking access to electricity and more than 900 million without clean cooking solutions, the need for collaboration to address challenges and foster development has never been more urgent.
“However, organizations like Sankofa Events Limited and individuals like Paul Sinclair exploit platforms such as AOW: Energy to further their own interests,” remarked the AEC.
“Instead of prioritizing Africa’s fundamental needs, these entities continually strive to attract investment for personal benefit.
“Through misrepresentation, they aim to draw capital and participants to their event, regardless of their inability to deliver on their promises.”
The AEC stressed that such actions impede productivity, disrupt meaningful advancement in addressing key energy challenges, and adversely impact the continent’s initiatives to combat energy poverty.
“The lawsuit initiated by the AEC aims to hold Sankofa Events Limited and Paul Sinclair accountable for their actions,” stated NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC.
