Pirates Target Historic Fourth Consecutive MTN8 Championship

Orlando Pirates’ head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is eagerly anticipating the challenge of leading the Buccaneers against Mamelodi Sundowns in the second leg of the MTN8 semifinal at Lucas Moripe Stadium this Saturday.

The Buccaneers are focused on defending their title while striving for four consecutive wins in the tournament, a remarkable achievement that would solidify their position as a dominant force in this competition.

“For any coach, being part of such a match is truly special, especially in front of devoted fans and against one of Africa’s elite clubs,” Ouaddou remarked, emphasizing the significance of this showdown between two of South Africa’s top teams.

“Whenever two leading clubs clash, it’s a crucial moment for any coach. We’re determined to push through and secure our spot in the final.”

Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Orlando Stadium last week, both teams are feeling the pressure as they vie for the opportunity to progress to the final.

The Moroccan coach noted the challenges of the aggregate score, stating, “The aggregate score poses difficulties for both squads, necessitating a tactical and intelligent approach to the match. It will be interesting to see how each side navigates this challenge.”

When asked about his game plan, the former Marumo Gallants coach mentioned he wasn’t ready to disclose his strategy but assured that the match would be exciting for both teams.

On the subject of defending their title, Ouaddou expressed his determination, saying, “If we reach the final, our aim will be to win the title. This is our title as the club won it last year, and we need to defend it.”

The Buccaneers have a storied history in this competition, having triumphed over Sundowns in the semifinals of 2022 and again in the finals of 2023.

Even though they did not meet Sundowns in last year’s tournament, this semifinal clash promises to be exhilarating.

Under the leadership of Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, the Buccaneers have celebrated victories in the MTN8 for the past three seasons, and they are now poised for a fourth triumph under Ouaddou’s guidance.
