UJ Snaps Wits’ Unbeaten Streak in Exciting Varsity Football Clash

The 2025 Varsity Football season continues to build anticipation as the third round of matches took place on Thursday.

The much-anticipated Johannesburg Derby featuring Wits University and the University of Johannesburg concluded in a thrilling 1-0 triumph for UJ, marking the first defeat for Wits this season.

This outcome dropped Wits from first to third place with six points, while UJ moved up to second with seven points.

The Tshwane University of Technology held onto its top position with seven points after a convincing 3-1 victory over the Central University of Technology, which remains at the bottom of the table with no points.

The Durban University of Technology faced challenges, falling 2-1 to the University of the Free State at home. UFS is now in fifth place with four points, while DUT sits in seventh.


In another matchup, North-West University and the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) ended in a goalless draw, placing NWU fourth with five points and UP-Tuks sixth with six points.

Notably, UP-Tuks, CUT, and DUT are still in search of their first wins this season.

The upcoming matches promise to be exciting as all teams are slated to compete next Thursday.

The schedule features CUT facing DUT, UJ squaring off against UP-Tuks, NWU visiting UFS, and the table-topping TUT going up against Wits in a highly anticipated clash.
