Ace Magashule Criticizes ANC at David Mkhabela’s Funeral

Ace Magashule, President of the African Congress for Transformation (ACT), has expressed concern over the declining state of the African National Congress (ANC), asserting that the party has been losing ground since 2017.

During the funeral service for ACT’s only Free State Legislature member, David Mkhabela, Magashule noted that the current state of municipalities underscores the deep divisions within the ANC. He referred to the Government of National Unity (GNU) as a “betrayal of the people.”

“What has the ANC achieved since 2018? The President of the ANC questions the National Dialogue, pondering why there are water shortages, why clinics lack medicines, and why a few individuals possess immense wealth. Who is accountable for maintaining adequate water supplies?”

“Who is responsible for ensuring better roads and reduced crime among the ruling party? It falls on the President of the country and the ANC. The youth league in the Free State is calling for the dissolution of nine municipalities. This indicates a clear lack of confidence from the ANC,” Magashule emphasized.

“This young man, after his inauguration last year as MPL for ACT, called me with great excitement, saying, ‘Uncle, all those questions you’ve been pondering—I was inaugurated today; I’m now an MPL.’

“Tragically, he was unable to attend a single provincial legislature sitting, as he fell ill shortly after his inauguration and spent nearly a year hospitalized at Pretoria East Hospital, Netcare,” Paul recalled.

Condolences from Free State Leaders

The Speaker of the Free State Legislature, Mxolisi Dukwana, conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.

“On behalf of the Legislature, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of our esteemed member. To the ACT leadership, he was one of you, and while his time was short, his legacy will persist. We will not refer to him in the past tense,” Dukwana remarked.

Mkhabela became ACT’s only member in the provincial legislature following the May 2024 general elections. Several speakers at the funeral expressed criticism towards those who opposed his nomination, emphasizing how his commitment and intellect proved his worth.
