Tinkler Praises Barker’s Contributions at Stellenbosch FC
Eric Tinkler, the head coach of Sekhukhune United, has commended Steve Barker for his remarkable impact on Stellenbosch’s achievements over the past eight years.
Barker assumed control of Stellenbosch in 2017 when the team was still competing in the National First Division, effectively guiding them to promotion to the premier league. His leadership saw the club reach the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup for the first time during the 2022/23 season.
Additionally, they became the inaugural champions of the 2023/24 Carling Knockout Champions and earned a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Barker also led the team to the semi-finals of the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup and the finals of the MTN8.
Situated in the Cape Winelands, the club has established itself as a formidable challenger in the Betway Premiership, consistently finishing among the top eight in recent seasons.
Tinkler emphasized that Barker’s contributions should not be underestimated, noting the impressive development he has cultivated within the club.
“Steve has been with Stellies for eight years now, and the progress is quite apparent,” Tinkler stated.
“The understanding, culture, and discipline ingrained in the club are commendable, especially considering his military background. The club’s dedication to him has played a crucial role in their success.”
“I recall his initial seasons being challenging, and at many other clubs in South Africa, he might have faced dismissal. Yet, they chose to support him, and now they are reaping the results. The accomplishments of Stellies over the past few seasons are extraordinary, and much of the credit belongs to him and his coaching staff.”
Looking forward, Tinkler’s team is gearing up to face Stellies in the second leg of the MTN8 semifinal at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday (18:00).
The 55-year-old shared his insights on Stellenbosch as they prepare for the second leg following their 2-0 defeat in the first match.
“It’s about more than just the initial game. During my tenure at Cape Town City, I never managed to defeat Stellies; I have learned significant lessons over the last four to five years.”
“Stellies are adept at counterattacking, exploiting their opponents’ mistakes, which makes them very dangerous. Neutralizing that threat is a challenging endeavor.”
“Often, teams strive to be bold with the ball, creating chances yet also making errors. We must work to minimize those mistakes,” Tinkler concluded.
