Cape Forum Strongly Condemns K-Word Video
Cape Town – The Cape Forum has expressed deep disappointment and concern over a video that has emerged on social media, showing a young (coloured) girl making a racist remark towards (black) classmates.
“We strongly condemn this behavior,” asserted Heindrich Wyngaard, Chairperson of the Cape Forum, on Monday, 25 August 2025.
“We recognize that the incident occurred at Knysna High School in the Southern Cape.
“This is a community where the Cape Forum is actively engaged in safety initiatives.”
The Cape Forum commended the transparency shown by Principal Mark Mosdell in his response to the situation, particularly in the letter addressed to parents and students, where he denounced all forms of racism.
“Our organization is dedicated to promoting mutual respect and honoring South Africa’s diverse cultural fabric,” Wyngaard highlighted.
“We cannot accept or justify any act of disrespect or racism—regardless of who it comes from—between different groups.
“When a learner uses the k-word, it must be treated with the utmost seriousness and consideration.”
Wyngaard emphasized that the primary mission of the Cape Forum is education.
He noted that the organization intends to approach the school with a proposal to conduct workshops for senior students aimed at improving their cultural sensitivity.
The Cape Forum believes that merely condemning the incident is inadequate; proactive steps must be taken as well.
“Our biggest concern is that this may be perceived as an isolated incident, while racist attitudes could actually linger among a wider circle of students,” Wyngaard remarked.
“We are also alarmed by the origin of the student’s comment and encourage the entire school community—learners, parents, educators, staff, and local leaders—to participate in this educational initiative.”
He stressed that the educational mission of the Cape Forum entails addressing racial prejudice and fostering social cohesion at all levels of society.
“This is especially important as we approach the upcoming Heritage Month celebrations.”
