McKenzie Confirms VAR Implementation Nearing Completion

Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s Minister of Sports, has shared an update on the status of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system deployment in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

The minister noted that the project is nearing completion, with the final phases now dependent on the South African Football Association (SAFA).

Following several disputed officiating decisions in crucial matches, McKenzie assured the public that the funding necessary for the VAR implementation is secure.

In June 2023, SAFA reached out to FIFA to request a detailed cost breakdown for the initiative, which encompasses training for referees and technical staff, as well as vital equipment. Abdul Ebrahim, SAFA’s head of referees, mentioned that they are currently awaiting a response from the international governing body.

“We have sent a letter to FIFA indicating our commitment to implement the VAR system, and FIFA has confirmed receipt of our correspondence. We expect their reply shortly,” Ebrahim stated. “They will guide us on the next steps.”

Victor Gomes, chair of the SAFA Referees Committee and a respected former referee, confirmed that the letter was aimed at seeking advice and notifying FIFA of SAFA’s readiness to proceed with this initiative.

“We have diligently prepared to launch this project,” Gomes declared. “When I took on the chair role, prioritizing the introduction of VAR was essential, and I am thrilled to announce that this will soon come to fruition.”

During his address at the SA Sport Awards in Sun City on Sunday, McKenzie reiterated that the process is approaching its final stages.

“VAR is undergoing its last review stages. It’s on the horizon. Funding has been secured. SAFA is currently in charge of the review,” he stated. “This matter now lies outside my jurisdiction. FIFA has certain requirements.”

While progress seems hopeful, it remains unclear whether VAR will be in place for the current PSL season.
