Rio Tinto Suspends Simandou Iron Ore Project After Tragic Incident

Rio Tinto Group has suspended activities at its Simandou iron ore project in Guinea after a worker’s fatality on-site, according to a press release issued on Sunday. The company has not disclosed additional details concerning the incident or its impact on the project’s timeline.

The first shipments of high-grade iron ore from this large West African initiative are set to commence in November, following numerous delays. Rio, the operator of the mine, did not provide updates on whether this schedule might be altered due to the current halt at the SimFer mine.

“All operations at the SimFer mine site are now paused, and assistance is being extended to colleagues affected by this situation,” the company stated.

Simon Trott, who began his tenure as Rio’s new CEO on Monday, intends to visit the project site. Trott emphasized that the company will launch an investigation.

Rio is progressing with the initiative in partnership with entities such as Aluminium Corp of China.

While the initial shipments are expected to be modest as production increases, achieving full capacity could have a major effect on the global iron ore market.
