South African Ambassador Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu Passes Away While Heading Home

Pretoria – The South African Ambassador to Kenya, Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu, has tragically passed away while on his way to a hospital in South Africa after a brief illness.

“It is with profound sadness that the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr. Ronald Lamola, announces the unexpected death of a devoted family man and public servant, Mr. Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu, who passed away on 24 August 2025, while traveling to a South African hospital due to a short illness,” stated the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

Mahlangu held numerous prestigious roles, including SA High Commissioner to Kenya, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Somalia, and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON).

His distinguished career also included his service as South Africa’s Ambassador to the United States of America.

Affectionately known as “MJ,” Ambassador Mahlangu was born on October 8, 1952, in Middleburg, Mpumalanga, and was a true patriot.

His journey began as a student activist, where he played a significant role in shaping a new, democratic South Africa.

He was part of the team that drafted the nation’s post-apartheid constitution and was elected to the first democratic parliament in 1994.

His commitment continued as Deputy Chairperson and later as Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces.

Ambassador Mahlangu’s legacy embodies unwavering dedication and love for his country.

As Minister Ronald Lamola stated: “Ambassador Mahlangu was a true patriot whose commitment to our nation was evident in his approach to implementing our foreign policy.”
