Operation Vala Umgodi: Over 200 Suspects Captured in Just One Week
Pretoria – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has announced that its Vala Umgodi operations, focused on addressing illegal mining and its related crimes, successfully apprehended 215 suspects in just one week.
The detained individuals, which include foreign nationals, were arrested from 18 to 24 August 2025 for various offenses related to illegal mining as well as other serious crimes such as:
- illegal possession of explosives,
- illegal possession of unlicensed firearms,
- unauthorized possession of gold-bearing material,
- unauthorized possession of precious metals,
- possession of gold processing equipment, and
- violations of the SA Immigration Act.
Additionally, Operation Vala Umgodi led to a significant conviction involving two Mozambican nationals.
On 20 August 2025, the Polokwane Regional Court sentenced Adam Sithole, 28, and Musa Mlambo, 22, to ten (10) years of direct imprisonment each for unlawful mining and violations of the Immigration Act.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mukhathi reported that several items were seized during the Vala Umgodi operations last week, including:
- 2 unlicensed firearms
- 3 vehicles (2 bakkies and 1 truck)
Highlights of Vala uMgodi Operations Nationwide
Gauteng – In Gauteng, Operation Vala Umgodi focused on illegal mining activities within the Benoni policing precinct, Ekurhuleni District.
This operation resulted in the arrest of five suspects for illegal mining and immigration violations.
Authorities also seized a significant quantity of equipment and materials, including pendukas, gas bottles, oxygen cylinders, steel pots, stampers, shovels, pangas, steel balls, gold-bearing material, electric cords, plastic basins, a crusher machine, pickaxes, drive belts, and grinders.
Free State – The Vala Umgodi multidisciplinary teams executed several successful operations, leading to multiple arrests for various offenses, including Immigration Act violations, illegal mining, and possession of unlawful gold processing equipment.
On 19 August 2025, members of Operation Vala Umgodi, in collaboration with mine security in Virginia, apprehended a 38-year-old male involved in illegal mining activities on mine property.
This individual was found in possession of gold-bearing material and illicit mining equipment.
In Thabong, authorities detained a foreign national near Moeletsi Hostel, observed handling gas hose pipes in muddy water.
The operation resulted in the confiscation of a 200kg black oxygen cylinder, a 9kg silver gas cylinder, and various gas pipes and nozzles, with the suspect arrested for unlawful possession of gold processing equipment.
Additionally, team members conducted a disruptive operation at an old shaft near Virginia, leading to the arrest of five suspects aged 32 to 59, who were charged with illegal mining, breaches of the Immigration Act, and possession of suspected gold-bearing material and processing equipment.
On the same day, based on intelligence, two males aged 32 and 44 were arrested in Welkom while suspected gold processing equipment was seized from them.
The team then proceeded to K10 informal settlement in Odendaalrus, where they apprehended a 33-year-old illegal foreign national discovered with gold processing equipment and a two-way radio.
Northern Cape – On 23 August 2025, the SAPS Combat and Proactive teams in the Namakwa and Frances Baard Districts implemented Vehicle Check Points (VCPs), routine patrols in illegal mining hotspots, and compliance inspections at mining sites, resulting in the arrest of 20 suspects.
In the Frances Baard District, acting on intelligence, the team apprehended three suspects aged between 26 and 52 for drug-related offenses in Barkly West and Kimberley.
During their operation, supported by SAPS narcotics K9, multiple properties were raided, uncovering drugs hidden in various locations within the dwellings.
The team confiscated Tik and Mandrax.
Limpopo – The Mopani District Operation Vala Umgodi task force executed an intelligence-driven operation, leading to three arrests of suspected illegal miners at Mavalani village on 19 August 2025.
The operation resulted in the confiscation of illegal mining gear, including 2 gas cylinders, 10 iron balls, 3 hammers, 3 picks, 2 shovels, a panga, 3 penduka motors, 19 bags of minerals, 3 pendukas, 1 iron bar, 3 fan belts, 2 gold scales, and a wheelbarrow.
North West – The Vala Umgodi team in the Bojanala Platinum District apprehended 27 suspects during a recent operation.
A range of mining equipment was also seized, including jackhammers, drill bits, generators, 13.75 kg of gold-bearing material, and pendukas.
Operation Vala Umgodi highlights the government’s dedication to dismantling these criminal networks and safeguarding the country’s mineral resources.
