Hawks Storm TikTok Creator’s Home After Satirical Video Criticizing Police Minister
Johannesburg – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has contacted Acting Minister of Police, Professor Feroz Cachalia, to seek clarity on the reasoning behind the Hawks’ raid on TikTok content creator Anton Taylor’s home, following allegations of crimes against the state.
Taylor posted a satirical TikTok video in March 2025, aimed at the now-suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
In response, Mchunu filed a criminal complaint against Taylor, asserting that the TikTok video was “extremely, extremely hurtful and damaging.”
DA MP Lisa Schickerling, the party’s spokesperson on police matters, noted that subsequent to the complaint, Hawks officers conducted a raid on Taylor’s residence and interrogated him afterwards.
“What the Hawks hoped to find by searching Mr. Taylor’s home, given that the ‘offensive’ video was already available online, is anyone’s guess,” Schickerling remarked on Friday, 29 August 2025.
“Were the supposedly offensive remarks hiding in his living room?”
Schickerling emphasized that after weeks of investigation by the Hawks and “hundreds of man-hours wasted on what can only be described as a ‘witch hunt’,” the National Prosecuting Authority opted not to pursue charges against Taylor.
“To be clear; while Mr. Taylor’s video might have been provocative, it was not criminal and definitely not a crime against the state,” Schickerling asserted.
“The Hawks, being a specialized crime-fighting unit, should be wiser than to be used against a citizen exercising his constitutionally protected rights.
“Satire is not treason. Comedy is not sedition.”
