Constable ‘Mute’ Apprehended Following Witnessing Chesnay Kepler Homicide: Insights from Crime Warden

Johannesburg – The police constable who witnessed the murder of Gauteng Crime Warden Chesnay Kepler has been detained by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

The 35-year-old constable from the Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) at the Eldorado Park Police Station was apprehended on Friday, 29 August 2025.

IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping confirmed that the constable’s arrest is connected to the murder of Kepler.

He faces charges of attempted murder and failing to report a crime scene to IPID.

Kepler was unfortunately shot, reportedly by her boyfriend, Police Sergeant Mandla Buthelezi, last December.

Sergeant Buthelezi, who is currently on bail, was also assigned to the Eldorado Park Police Station during the incident.

Suping stated that the constable was with Sergeant Buthelezi at the time of the incident.

Following an argument, the constable allegedly assaulted Kepler’s three friends.

Afterward, he reportedly fired shots at Kepler’s friends as they left the scene.

Suping indicated that the arrested constable faces charges of attempted murder, obstructing justice, and breaching Section (29(1) and 33(3) of the IPID Act for failing to report a crime.

“The accused will remain in custody until his first court appearance on Monday, 01 September 2025, at the Protea Magistrate’s Court,” the IPID spokesperson announced.
