Man Utd Players Prefer Ruben Amorim Over 39-Year-Old Tom Heaton Following Onana and Bayindir’s Recent Mistakes

Players at MANCHESTER UNITED are feeling hopeful that the current goalkeeping predicament may see 39-year-old third-choice Tom Heaton taking the spotlight.

Several members of the first-team squad believe that Heaton has been performing better than both No. 1 Andre Onana and No. 2 Altay Bayindir in training, warranting an opportunity to exhibit his talents during a match.

United’s goalkeeping dilemma has been under scrutiny since the club made a £43 million investment in Onana from Inter Milan in 2023.

After replacing David De Gea, Onana’s performances have been uneven: he managed 24 clean sheets but has also made several critical errors.

Amorim initiated the season with Bayindir as No. 2 goalkeeper for the first Premier League match against Arsenal, where a pivotal mistake led to United’s 1-0 loss.

Bayindir was also part of last week’s 1-1 draw against Fulham, where he struggled with crosses and lost possession, granting Burnley an equalizer late in the match, despite Bruno Fernandes securing a last-minute penalty win.

In a recent Carabao Cup match, Onana faced backlash for his performance, being responsible for both goals conceded against Grimsby and only managed to touch five penalties without saving any, resulting in a 12-11 defeat in the shootout.

According to sources from SunSport, Heaton, who has only made three senior appearances since rejoining the club in 2021, deserves a shot.

Sources stated: “Some players believe Tom should get a chance based on his training performances. His experience and dedication to fitness make him an essential member of the squad.

“Given that the other two are having difficulties, it’s worth considering Tom for a game.”

Initially, Heaton was a youth player at United from 2002 to 2005 and proceeded to become a senior player from 2005 to 2010.

During his first tenure at the club, he didn’t make any first-team appearances and spent considerable time on loan before returning in 2021 as a backup.

He is one of six first-team players in Amorim’s leadership group responsible for maintaining team spirit in the locker room.

Amorim offered his backing to Onana following the Carabao Cup exit, saying: “It’s not just about Andre. The issues represent a broader team effort.”

United have also been in talks to acquire Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens for £17 million.

This summer, Onana expressed his intent to remain at United and fight for his position.
