Shalulile Sets Record as Sundowns Defeat Stellies
Peter Shalulile has made history by becoming the all-time leading goal scorer in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), netting his 130th goal in Mamelodi Sundowns’ 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium on Saturday.
Shalulile’s penalty kick right before halftime turned out to be the decisive moment of the match, allowing Sundowns to secure the three points and maintain their position at the top of the league.
The Brazilians dominated from the beginning, creating various opportunities in the first 20 minutes, although Stellenboschβs defense stood strong.
Arthur Sales nearly scored in the 30th minute with a powerful shot, but Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens delivered an impressive save.
Shortly after, Tashreeq Matthews had a golden opportunity to score following a defensive blunder by Stellenbosch, but he squandered his one-on-one chance against Stephens.
A pivotal moment arrived just before halftime when Shalulile was fouled in the box, prompting the referee to award a penalty. He dispatched it confidently, putting Sundowns ahead 1-0.
This historic goal enabled Shalulile to surpass Siyabonga Nomvetheβs long-held record, solidifying his status as one of the league’s all-time legends.
In the second half, Sundowns’ coach Miguel Cardoso brought Iqraam Rayners on in search of a second goal.
The substitution quickly bore fruit as Sundowns generated several more chances, but they were unable to extend their lead.
Cardoso also substituted Shalulile for Jayden Adams in the 65th minute to enhance the midfield.
Adams almost assisted in securing a second goal when Kutlwano Lutlhaku fired a powerful long-range shot that just missed the crossbar.
In the final ten minutes, Sundowns made additional substitutions, introducing Teboho Mokoena and Devine Lunga, yet Stellenbosch’s defense remained resilient, preventing any change in the scoreline.
The 1-0 victory keeps Sundowns atop the league standings with 11 points, while Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United, with 10 points each, will have their chances to challenge in their upcoming matches against Golden Arrows and Durban City.
Sundowns’ next match is against Magesi at Lucas Moripe Stadium on September 14, following the FIFA international break.
Meanwhile, Stellenbosch will shift their focus to the MTN8 Cup final against Orlando Pirates, scheduled for September 13 at Mbombela Stadium.
