Lira’s Inspiring Recovery Journey: Three Years After Her Stroke
South African music icon Lira has opened up about her healing journey, more than three years after a stroke significantly changed her life.
The “Wa Mpaleha” artist was on tour in Frankfurt, Germany, in March 2022 when she encountered a health scare that led to difficulties with her speech. She was later diagnosed with aphasia, a disorder that affects communication and language.

This initiated a lengthy and emotional recovery journey in South Africa, marked by therapy, strong will, and steadfast faith.
“I Had to Learn the Alphabet Again”
Reflecting on her recovery, Lira noted that she had to relearn the fundamentals.

“I needed to relearn the alphabet and how to construct simple words, like ‘cat, hello, apple,’ and use those to form sentences,” she explained.
The path was anything but straightforward. At times, the progress seemed agonizingly slow, but Lira emphasized that the journey allowed her to see life from a new perspective.
“Slowing down enabled me to value the progress I was making. It filled me with gratitude, joy, and excitement as I observed my improvements.”
In May 2025, Lira celebrated one year since her official return to the stage—an achievement she holds dear.
