Bronkhorstspruit: Bail Granted to Two Schoolboys Charged in Classmate’s Fatal Stabbing

Bronkhorstspruit – The Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates’ Court has granted bail to two students from Lesedi Secondary School who are facing premeditated murder charges.

The first defendant, 20-year-old Mlehalinye Montasi, a Grade 12 student, has been released on bail of R6 000. His co-defendant, 19-year-old Kgotlhello Mathabathe, a Grade 10 student, was granted bail set at R3 000.

This tragic event took place on 17 June 2025, shocking the small town of Bronkhorstspruit, situated 50 km east of Pretoria, Tshwane, following the fatal stabbing of Lethabo Mokonyane, a Grade 10 student.

According to reports, Mokonyane was confronted by Montasi and Mathabathe on his way to the school gate after finishing their exams.

A confrontation ensued, during which one of the accused restrained Mokonyane while the other stabbed him multiple times with a sharp object.

Mokonyane was swiftly taken to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

In court, the accused requested bail, citing their need to continue their education.

Prosecutor Karabo Sebela opposed the bail application, highlighting that Montasi was in the country without legal status, thus posing a flight risk.

She also pointed out that both defendants were acquainted with the witnesses and could interfere with their testimonies.

Despite these concerns, the magistrate granted bail to the two learners, imposing strict conditions.

These stipulations require that the accused attend all court proceedings until the trial wraps up, refrain from interfering with witnesses, and comply with correctional supervision along with all related rules.

According to Lumka Mahanjana, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Gauteng, the case has been postponed until 10 October 2025.
