Minister Macpherson Pays Tribute to UIM Leader Neil De Beer After His Passing

Cape Town – Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Dean Macpherson has expressed profound sadness over the passing of Neil de Beer, the Leader of the United Independent Movement (UIM).

The UIM announced De Beer’s death on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

De Beer was a prominent anti-apartheid activist, with Minister Macpherson highlighting his significant influence on the “history and politics of our nation through various roles in multiple organizations.”

Minister Macpherson remarked: “From his beginnings as an uMkhonto weSizwe operative during apartheid to serving as President Nelson Mandela’s national security advisor, and founding the UIM, Neil embodied loyalty, dedication, and commitment.”

“I was fortunate that Neil accepted my invitation to attend the Department’s budget vote in Parliament as my special guest in July.”

“During the discussion, I took the opportunity to recognize his remarkable contributions to our democracy and to publicly honor him for his efforts, which had not received adequate acknowledgment.”

The Minister continued, “On behalf of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, we extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mr. de Beer.”

“May his selfless dedication inspire all of us, reminding us that our service to the country is to forge a brighter future for those to come.”

“May his soul find eternal peace.”
