EC Premier Mabuyane Rejects AfriForum’s Allegations Regarding NPA Reviving Corruption Probe

Johannesburg – Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has rejected reports suggesting that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has reopened a corruption case against him and referred the situation to the police for further inquiry.

This week, AfriForum announced that the head of the National Prosecution Service (NPS) had reopened a high-value corruption case involving Premier Mabuyane and several high-ranking state officials.

As per AfriForum, the case has been referred back to the police for more investigation.

However, Premier Mabuyane has responded to these claims, categorizing AfriForum’s assertions as incorrect.

A statement issued by the Provincial Communications Services in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 3 September 2025, stated: “The claim made by AfriForum, alleging that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has reopened a case against Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane and referred it to the police for further investigation, signifies an unlawful attempt to influence the independent decision reached by the NPA and communicated to Premier Mabuyane.”

The statement added: “What this Afrikaner pressure group aims to do is illegal and violates the law, given that the NPA’s choice not to pursue charges against Premier Mabuyane stemmed from their independent evaluation of the information submitted by the police.”

“AfriForum’s recent actions represent a classic example of attempting to improperly and unlawfully sway the NPA to make an unjust decision, accompanied by intimidation aimed at both the NPA and Premier Mabuyane.”

Furthermore, AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit has indicated that it is contemplating prosecuting Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane and other senior state officials related to a multimillion rand corruption case.

In response, the Provincial Communications Services commented: “It is clear that their threat of private prosecution is unlikely to succeed, thus they are trying to unduly influence the NPA.”

“There is no foundation for the NPA to reverse their decision not to charge Premier Mabuyane in this matter.”

“This statement from AfriForum exemplifies a trend of legal misconduct and harassment directed at Premier Mabuyane.”

The Provincial Communications Services concluded: “Premier Mabuyane has committed no crime and has observed all laws in our country, and he fully supports the fair and just decision made by the NPA following their independent process, which led to their choice not to prosecute him in this issue.”

The NPA has yet to comment on the situation.
