Maboe on His Comeback to Chiefs: “I Have Unfinished Business with Amakhosi”

Lebohang Maboe, the latest player to join Kaizer Chiefs, is thrilled to return to the club where his football career first took flight.

The 31-year-old midfielder has recently inked a deal with the Chiefs after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns following last season.

This move marks a return to the club’s academy, where Maboe began his football journey before finding success elsewhere.

“I was excited to come back home, to the senior team at Kaizer Chiefs,” Maboe stated.

“Considering how my previous stint concluded, I felt there was unfinished business with the team, and this return truly feels amazing.”

The Chiefs had monitored Maboe during his time at Maritzburg United, but Sundowns snagged him before the 2018/19 season.

Notably, Maboe played a key role in Sundowns’ title ambitions by netting a hat-trick in the decisive match of the 2019/20 season against Black Leopards.

This victory secured the league title for Sundowns, thwarting the Chiefs, who needed a win on the final day but ended up drawing with Baroka FC.

Maboe now looks forward to making up for that pivotal disappointment, which was the last occasion the Chiefs came close to clinching the league trophy.

Talks about Maboe’s possible move to the Chiefs initiated in June once he understood he wouldn’t be returning to Sundowns, where he had been loaned to SuperSport United during part of the previous season.

“Once I realized I wouldn’t be going back to Sundowns in June, that’s when the discussions began,” Maboe clarified.

“It was unfortunate that I required shoulder surgery, but I am grateful for the team’s patience with me. Now, I am focused on being back home and working hard to earn their trust.”
