Summary

  • Centrifuge, Janus Henderson, and S&P DJI introduced the inaugural licensed S&P 500 index fund
  • The SPXA index will track the S&P 500, making it available for DAOs and on-chain funds

Tokenization is swiftly gaining traction on Wall Street. On Thursday, Sept. 25, Centrifuge announced the launch of the Janus Henderson Anemoy S&P 500 Fund (SPXA), representing the first S&P 500 index fund approved by S&P Dow Jones Indices, a leading index provider.

This initiative marks a significant advancement for real-world assets in the crypto sphere. The SPXA fund will provide exposure to the S&P 500 index via on-chain finance, DeFi platforms, and DAOs. Traders will enjoy transparent holdings, programmability, and composability across DeFi protocols.

“The benchmarks of traditional finance continue to shape the global economy, with no index being as crucial as the S&P 500,” said Bhaji Illuminati, CEO of Centrifuge. “Indices facilitate the transition of stocks on-chain: they are simple, collateral-ready, and unlock liquidity in ways that individual securities cannot. SPXA represents a vital step in making all assets investable on-chain, accessible to global investors at any time.”

Janus Henderson, a prominent active asset manager with $457 billion in assets under management, will serve as the sub-investment manager for the fund.

“The launch of SPXA in collaboration with Centrifuge perfectly aligns with our blockchain strategy, bringing the world’s foremost equity index to a new generation of investors,” remarked Nick Cherney, Head of Innovation at Janus Henderson. “This marks the initiation of a broader effort to enhance our tokenization capabilities and provide secure, efficient access to global markets.”

S&P Dow Jones Indices, responsible for managing the S&P 500 index, adds institutional credibility to the SPXA tokenized fund.

“Our collaboration with Centrifuge enables investors to gain direct exposure to the S&P 500 Index within a blockchain framework that fosters liquidity, transparency, and interoperability,” stated Cameron Drinkwater, Chief Product Officer at S&P Dow Jones Indices. “Blockchain offers a revolutionary opportunity for S&P DJI, and Centrifuge shares our vision for developing the future of index-linked financial products.”
