Crawford’s choice to retire was heavily influenced by the fees imposed by boxing’s governing bodies.
For his win against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez last September, the WBC required a fee of $300,000, which Crawford firmly declined.
When reflecting on his retirement, Crawford emphasized that financial incentives were never his main goal.
He expressed: “I suppose I did pay the cost to be the boss. What a way to end a career. Anything is possible if you believe in yourself.
“Many people keep asking me why I chose to retire.
“I’ve been in this sport since I was seven. Retiring at 38? If you’ve endured physical challenges for thirty years, would you step back? That’s my reason for retiring.
“There’s nothing left for me to achieve in boxing. I’ve devoted so much to this sport, but prioritizing my health over it is crucial.
“If I were to return, who would I fight against? There’s no one left and nothing more to accomplish. That would mean coming back for both the sport and financial rewards. I never fought for money; I fought for my legacy.”
