Mopane Worm and Termite Sales: A Pathway to Poverty Alleviation in Rural South Africa

South Africa’s Limpopo province shares its boundaries with Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Mozambique. It is considered one of the poorest provinces in the country, due to historical neglect, high unemployment rates, a heavy dependence on government grants, and a largely rural economy that lacks significant industrial diversification.

This area intrigues me as a geographer. My work integrates traditional ecological knowledge, environmental geography, conservation, and societal aspects. I aim to achieve environmentally sustainable outcomes by recognizing local cultures, sacred sites, and community practices in the management of natural resources across southern Africa.

In two recent studies, I explored how local communities in Limpopo are transforming insect harvesting into a commercial enterprise to combat severe poverty.

The first study investigated the commercialization process surrounding mopane worms. Mopane worms (Gonimbrasia belina) are a nutritious, high-protein seasonal delicacy for many communities in Limpopo.

The second study focused on the harvesting and commercialization of termite alates in the province.

These natural resources are essential for food security and poverty alleviation. Both mopane worms and alate termites offer high-quality nutrition and significant income opportunities for rural households. These edible insects are sold in both formal and informal markets at local and regional levels.

This initiative is largely driven by unemployment, economic challenges, and the urgent need for cash income in rural areas.

My research shows that these resources are crucial for rural households, making sustainable management essential. Utilizing local knowledge is a powerful method to achieve this.

An independent study I conducted revealed that traditional knowledge can support limited resource management by incorporating customary laws, taboos, and seasonal monitoring to prevent over-exploitation.

Mopane harvesting and trade The mopane worm study was executed in June and July 2023 in the Muyexe and Nsavulani villages, located in the Mopani District of Limpopo. This area boasts abundant mopane woodlands, the main food source for mopane worms (caterpillars). Historically, these communities have not thrived from development and heavily depend on natural resources for their survival.

The processing of mopane worms—from harvesting to marketable products—involves various traditional, manual methods aimed at ensuring quality. The worms undergo degutting (removing stomach contents or frass), washing, boiling, and drying to extend shelf life. They are then graded and sold either at home or in nearby towns.

I surveyed 161 households in Muyexe and 82 households in Nsavulani, conducting structured interviews with villagers that included:

  • The socio-economic status of the respondents.
  • The availability, procurement, processing, marketing, trading, and livelihood advantages of mopane worms.

The findings revealed that most harvesters in Muyexe (69%) and Nsavulani (59%) were women, almost all of whom processed the worms at home for both personal consumption and trade.

Those involved in trading reported earnings between R1,000 ($54) and R3,000 (US$163) per season, coinciding with the two mopane seasons in Limpopo: November to January and April to May.

Furthermore, 55% of households in Muyexe and 70% in Nsavulani relied exclusively on mopane worm sales for income (specifically individuals under 60 years who did not qualify for social grants or benefits). Even though income from mopane worms is seasonal, the communities hold it in high esteem.

The commercialization of mopane worms has greatly enhanced rural livelihoods.

This constitutes a crucial source of food security and cash income, aiding in poverty alleviation and improving the lives of those participating in the trade.

Termite harvesting and trade In another study, I examined the harvesting and commercialization of termite alates in Limpopo. I interviewed 71 respondents from Thohoyandou and Sibasa towns, as well as Mukula and Tshidzivhe villages, discovering that these insects are collected for home consumption and sale.

A larger percentage of women—75% of respondents—were involved compared to men, with nearly half having a secondary education and 23% holding higher education degrees; 63% were self-employed.

Most lived below the upper poverty level of R1,558 (approximately $95) per person per month. About 31% of traders reported that alates constituted up to 100% of household income during the selling season (October to December).

Management for the future

While the commercialization process puts stress on resources, traditional regulations and local management practices help protect the trees. My research on traditional ecological knowledge illustrated that communities enforced rules that:

  • Restricted the cutting of green branches;
  • Limited harvesting during specific seasons to allow for regrowth; and
  • Prohibited damage to trees during the mopane worm harvest.

Traditional ecological knowledge guided harvesting timings, ensured the health of host trees, and secured long-term livelihood opportunities for local communities.

This underscores the importance of integrating local traditional ecological knowledge into harvesting methods for sustainable resource management.

Management strategies must align with local and regional planning efforts, and communication with relevant authorities should be prioritized to foster collaboration and increase awareness regarding the importance of mopane trees for all stakeholders.

To ensure a sustainable future for this woodland species, I recommend that the government work with traditional leaders and communities to endorse and uphold existing traditional practices.The Conversation
