Cloudy Water: Temporary Closure of Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Facility
Pretoria – The City of Tshwane has declared a temporary halt to operations at the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant due to significant rainfall impacting the raw water quality.
The facility was taken offline on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, as recent downpours resulted in increased turbidity levels, leading to cloudy water that cannot be treated safely under standard protocols.
This suspension has affected the water supply to Bronkhorstspruit Town, Zithobeni, Ekandustria, Ekangala, Rethabiseng, and parts of the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality reliant on the Bronkhorstspruit system.
City officials stated that process controllers are continuously monitoring the water quality and operations at the plant. Production will recommence once conditions improve and treatment standards can be safely met.
“The City of Tshwane regrets the inconvenience caused and appreciates the residents’ patience, understanding, and cooperation during this period,” the municipality expressed in a release.
