Live Validator Testing Kicks Off for Solana Alpenglow Upgrade

The community validator testing for the Alpenglow upgrade on Solana has commenced, bringing one of the most significant technical enhancements for the network closer to its mainnet launch.

Anza announced on May 11 that Alpenglow is now live on a community test cluster, allowing validator operators to experiment with the new consensus architecture prior to broader implementation.

Anza described the launch as “the most significant consensus change in Solana’s history.” The team highlighted that the upgrade is currently operational on validator infrastructure in preparation for the mainnet and urged more operators to participate in the upcoming community cluster.

Alpenglow seeks improved finality

According to Solana’s official upgrade page, Alpenglow is under development and expected with the Agave 4.1 update. The upgrade aims to achieve confirmation times of 150ms for Solana, significantly less than the current finality duration.

The same update notes that Alpenglow will discontinue Proof of History and on-chain voting transactions, aiming to streamline the process by which the network achieves consensus on blocks, thereby reducing confirmation times and improving reliability.

Furthermore, prior analysis indicated that Alpenglow employs direct messaging, signature aggregation, and off-chain validator voting. The architecture is built around Votor, a lightweight voting system capable of finalizing blocks in one or two rounds based on validator support.

The proposal also includes a Validator Admission Ticket (VAT). As stated on Solana’s upgrade page, the VAT imposes a fee of 1.6 SOL that validators must pay to access the consensus set during each epoch. This modification aligns with the removal of voting transactions from blocks.

The race for Solana enhancements continues

Earlier reports from crypto.news highlighted that Alpenglow could potentially lower median block finality to around 150 milliseconds, and under optimal conditions, possibly to as low as 100 milliseconds. This improvement could bring Solana’s response times in line with Web2 infrastructure.

Another report indicated that Solana validators had voted on SIMD-0326, the proposal linked to Alpenglow, back in 2025. This proposal aims to replace TowerBFT with a faster and more efficient system that employs off-chain voting.

As testing continues, Solana (SOL) was trading near $97, with intraday fluctuations between $94 and $98, according to data from crypto.news. This price behavior reflected a minimal short-term market reaction as Alpenglow remains in the testing stage and has not yet transitioned to the mainnet.
