Suspended Police Chief General Masemola Goes Head-to-Head with ‘Cat’ Matlala in Court
Pretoria – Today, the suspended National Police Commissioner, General Fanie Masemola, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court alongside incarcerated businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and 16 others.
All defendants present on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, are facing charges related to the improper awarding of a R360 million tender to Medicare 24, a company owned by Matlala.
With the exception of General Masemola, all accused are charged with corruption, fraud, and money laundering.
General Masemola, who terminated the irregular contract after only four months, is facing four counts of violating the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).
During the brief court session, the state committed to providing the accused with the docket by 26 June 2026 and to updating the charge sheet to include General Masemola’s involvement.
A request from Matlala’s attorney for him to stay at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility for the second phase of consultations was approved.
All other suspects are either released on bail or under warning.
The proceedings have been postponed to 26 June 2026 for further investigations and docket disclosure to the accused.
Henry Mamothame, spokesperson for the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), mentioned that the consultations with Matlala have concluded. However, he added that new information emerged during these consultations, prompting further investigations by the state.
