Fox Bypasses Alexi Lalas for Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Awkward Live TV Moment

FOX has unexpectedly opted to showcase Sweden’s football legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic instead of American soccer icon Alexi Lalas.

During a live broadcast, the 56-year-old Lalas found himself in this awkward situation.

Lalas was taken aback when Ibrahimovic, 44, was awarded an Employee of the Month honor from Fox for his contributions during the 2026 World Cup.

The Swedish forward joined Lalas and former French player Thierry Henry, 48, on set as host Rebecca Lowe, 45, presented the accolade.

Ibrahimovic took the opportunity to tease Lalas, stating, “Just after one week? Wait, wait, Alexi, can you feel it? You never got this. I’d like to express my gratitude.

“This was a team effort, and I’m extremely proud. This is only after one week. Imagine what could happen after several months. I want to request a raise.”

Tensions between Lalas and his European counterparts have been apparent throughout Fox’s World Cup coverage.

Ibrahimovic humorously pointed out Lalas’ absence from the studio before the USA’s second match against Australia.

This prompted a light-hearted comment from Lalas regarding the Swedish star upon his return to the set.

Nonetheless, Lalas seemed to be in good humor as Ibrahimovic received his award from Fox.

“I just want to touch it,” Lalas admitted to Ibrahimovic.

“I’ve never seen one before.”

Host Lowe then informed the panel that Ibrahimovic’s title as Employee of the Month was, in fact, the very first ever awarded.

The former LA Galaxy star joined Fox just in time for the World Cup.

Prior to this, he earned 122 caps for Sweden, participating in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

This new role came three years after his retirement from professional football.

Meanwhile, Lalas is now covering his third World Cup with Fox.
