Tuchel Cautions England: Seven-Goal Advantage Against Panama, But Lacks Plan for Overcoming Defensive Teams

THOMAS TUCHEL has acknowledged that he hasn’t yet discovered the “solution” for overcoming teams that ‘park the bus’.

England is poised to face Panama — a squad Tuchel warns may implement a BACK SEVEN tactic — in tonight’s crucial Group L fixture, following a frustrating 0-0 stalemate with Ghana.

The German manager has urged Three Lions supporters to remain patient as they confront yet another team known for its low-block defensive style.

The World Cup final is set for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey; however, it may feel like New Jerzzzzey for a while on Saturday night.

England’s most uninspired performances under Tuchel in the past 18 months were during World Cup qualifiers against Latvia, Albania, and Andorra — teams that placed ten players behind the ball.

The former Chelsea coach stated: “We received a message from a respected colleague after Ghana switched coaches.

“He said, ‘Your greatest challenge will be the second game. Trust me on this’.

“We need to respect what we will encounter, yet trust our players.

“A different formation with a deep block is ahead of us. A back five is probable.

“At times, we may even witness a back six or seven during the match.

“Our aim is to overload specific areas and swiftly transition upon establishing these overloads.

“However, no overloads were achieved against Ghana, which might present a similar situation against Panama.

“Facing such defensive setups is often challenging. Nevertheless, we aimed to be proactive and felt we did enough to secure a win against Ghana.

“We had several counterattacks to handle but fell short effectively on two occasions, nearly costing us.”

Tuchel continued: “I haven’t yet uncovered the formula: ‘If they do this, we counter like that, and everything will fall into place’.

“We encourage our players to engage in one-on-one situations, and also two-on-two, three-on-three, or even four-on-four.”

“Even if we shift four players to one side, they will counter with four of their own. This results in a six-against-six scenario even during a switch of play.

“It’s challenging to increase the game’s tempo against these low blocks, as demonstrated in both the Champions League and the Premier League.

“All it takes is one moment of brilliance and a touch more precision in our deliveries.

“We need to refine our timing and awareness with crosses. That’s the half-chance we must capitalize on.

“Who is taking advantage of the delivery? Are we attacking the ball with enough aggression? How can we forge more opportunities from distance, perhaps through deflections that lead to goals? This is what we must concentrate on.”

England has come under scrutiny following their 3-1 defeat in a friendly against Senegal last year at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground.

Tuchel’s team also faced criticism after securing a narrow 1-0 win over Andorra and a 2-0 victory against the same team at Villa Park.

Despite the ups and downs of the World Cup, Tuchel seeks to maintain a balanced perspective.

He noted: “The highs shouldn’t soar too high, and the lows shouldn’t plummet too low. The match against Ghana wasn’t a low point.”

“I’ve encountered similar matches in the Champions League group stages against teams like Copenhagen or Leipzig.

“You can sense that they will celebrate their duels and counter-attacks.

“When they cross the halfway line, it feels like a goal celebration for them. That’s how it felt with Ghana — they rejoiced at the 0-0 draw like it was a triumph.

“However, we were left feeling somewhat disappointed.

“We plan to adopt a proactive and aggressive strategy against Panama while avoiding naivety or recklessness.

“It was tough in the games against Andorra, but I was satisfied with our performance in the second match. Everyone is now well-prepared, and Ghana proved to be a formidable opponent.”

Moreover, Tuchel encourages England to channel their passionate emotions instead of remaining “cold as ice”.

The Three Lions can secure the top position in Group L with a decisive victory.

Tuchel has also cautioned his players to refrain from retaliating against rough tactics to avert potential red cards.

He stated: “Emotional play is a crucial part of the game; we cannot afford to be cold as ice. We want to play passionately — yet we must not get sidetracked or drawn into confrontations that would solely benefit the underdog.

“We managed this well against Ghana; it’s imperative to play with emotion against these physical teams, or it may feel like we’re the victims.

“We have to support each other while maintaining the right balance.”
