Police Sergeant Accused of Taking Bribe to Secure Released of Detained Woman for Court Date

Polokwane – Authorities have called upon a 44-year-old police sergeant, alleged to have facilitated the unlawful release of a detained female foreign national just before her deportation, to appear in court.

The allegations claim that the sergeant, stationed at the Northam Police Station in Limpopo, was serving as a court orderly when the incident of escape from lawful custody occurred on 30 October 2023.

The situation came to light when inmates returned to Northam Police Station after court proceedings.

During a routine inspection, two relief commanders discovered that a female detainee due for deportation had not been returned to her cell.

When questioned, the sergeant reportedly stated he was on his way to the police station but failed to report for duty the following day.

The detained female foreign national was eventually found and re-arrested later in 2023.

It is alleged that a substantial amount of money was paid to a court orderly for her unlawful release.

The case has been referred to the Limpopo Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for further investigation.

After the investigation concluded, the case file was sent to the Senior Public Prosecutor for a ruling.

Following the prosecutor’s decision, the sergeant was served his summons on Friday, 3 July 2026.

He faces charges of corruption and aiding and abetting, and is set to make his first court appearance at the Northam Magistrate’s Court on 31 July 2026.

Major-General Jan Scheepers, Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, remarked: “This arrest sends a clear message that any member who undermines the rule of law and the integrity of our service will face the full consequences of the law.

“I commend the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for their thorough investigation that led to these charges.”

The sergeant has been ordered to appear in court on 31 July 2026 on charges of corruption and aiding and abetting.
