Cape Winelands Airport and Stellenbosch University Join Forces on R8 Billion Aviation Hub Project

Cape Winelands Airport and Stellenbosch University have established a formal cooperation agreement, effectively linking one of South Africa’s major ongoing aviation infrastructure projects with the Western Cape’s premier research pipeline.

This strategic partnership is rooted in shared frameworks of ‘smart’ and ‘green’ development. It integrates academic research with the practical execution of the airport’s long-term infrastructure plan, which has a projected capital expenditure of approximately R8 billion.

The scale of this multi-billion rand initiative aims to function as a real-world platform for technical collaboration, covering areas such as transport logistics, spatial planning, aviation research, and agricultural food processing.

Establishing an innovation ecosystem

The essence of the agreement focuses on technical collaboration and forward-thinking engineering solutions directly tied to the airport’s physical expansion. Within this framework, master’s students from Stellenbosch University’s Engineering Management program will engage in applied research projects centered on areas of strategic operational importance to Cape Winelands Airport.

This agreement goes beyond conventional academic placements, laying the groundwork for dedicated localized infrastructure to support physical product development.

The partnership will further explore opportunities to create facilities and environments that encourage testing, innovation, prototyping, and activities related to aviation, infrastructure, logistics, and smart technologies.

Deresh Ramjugernath, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University, pointed out that infrastructure development is a vital component of building regional capability.

“This initiative aligns seamlessly with the partnership-driven development we endorse, where infrastructure, innovation, and skills converge to create real impact.

“The Cape Winelands Airport project provides a unique opportunity to nurture a dynamic ecosystem that can propel economic growth, support emerging industries, and position the region as a hub of innovation and opportunity,” Ramjugernath noted.

Securing the Western Cape’s talent pipeline

From an employment and macroeconomic perspective, current forecasts indicate that the R8 billion master plan will be a significant catalyst for job creation in the province.

The development is expected to sustain around 35,000 direct and indirect jobs during its immediate construction and expansion phases. Over its initial 20 years of operational maturity, the ecosystem is projected to facilitate just over 100,000 direct and indirect positions.

Deon Cloete, managing director for Cape Winelands Airport, stressed that partnering with an educational institution is a pivotal step towards addressing the long-term human capital requirements of the aviation sector.

“The airport expansion also opens avenues for developing future aviation talent pipelines within South Africa. Through collaboration with Stellenbosch University and broader industry stakeholders, Cape Winelands Airport aims to explore opportunities related to aviation skills development, pilot training pathways, airport operations, engineering disciplines, and innovative transport and logistics solutions,” Cloete remarked.
