Nicky Henderson’s Contingency for Constitution Hill: Windsor Comeback Seems Improbable
The current drought situation has led Nicky Henderson to devise a new approach for the remarkable Constitution Hill.
This nine-year-old horse has been sidelined since maintaining his unbeaten record on the Flat at Kempton back in March—and a return to that racecourse could be imminent.
With another heatwave looming and no rain expected, a comeback at Windsor on August 29 seems increasingly unlikely, as Hendo had initially desired.
The trainer has consistently emphasized that he won’t race Constitution Hill, the former champion hurdler, on quick ground as he transitions from jumps.
Thus, the Group 3 September Stakes at Kempton has emerged as a backup option—but a one-week delay could prevent participation in the Irish St Leger on September 13.
Hendo remarked: “Weather conditions are a significant worry right now, not just for him, but for everyone. We really need some rain.”
“We still intend to race at Windsor, which is our preferred choice, but the conditions remain hot and dry, so we won’t run him on fast ground.”
“Fortunately, the September Stakes on the all-weather a week later stands as our Plan B. He’s in high spirits and excellent shape.”
Hendo has yet to lay out a long-term plan for Constitution Hill’s season.
Interest has surged from Australian officials, eager to attract him for the Melbourne Cup in November, but several options remain available closer to home.
