President Ramaphosa Engages with Family of the Late Captain Daniel Perez

Pretoria – President Cyril Ramaphosa has met with the family of the late Captain Daniel Perez following the South African government’s efforts that resulted in securing the return of his remains from Hamas.

Captain Perez, a native of South Africa, was taken hostage and tragically lost his life on 7 October 2023.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, the Presidency announced that President Ramaphosa extended his heartfelt condolences to the Perez family and reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to a comprehensive peace process intended to achieve lasting peace for both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.

“The South African government remains devoted to aiding all South Africans, irrespective of race or religion, who find themselves in conflict zones, in addition to providing assistance to other foreign nationals upon request,” the statement emphasized.

“This also involves facilitating the release of South Africans trapped in the Syrian conflict, individuals sold to Russian mercenaries, and ensuring the secure return of Ukrainian children.”
