Drive Unveils Exciting New Pick-Up Features in Johannesburg and Cape Town
Johannesburg – Whether you’re waiting outside the incorrect entrance of a shopping centre, standing on different sides of the street, or anxiously trying to communicate your location via chat while your driver loops the block, finding each other has become one of the most prevalent frustrations in ride-hailing.
To address this issue, global mobility platform inDrive has introduced two new app features, Panorama View and Recommended Pickup Points, in Johannesburg and Cape Town for the time being, making South Africa the first market globally to implement them.
These innovative features are aimed at simplifying the connection between passengers and drivers from the moment a ride is requested, minimizing confusion regarding pickup locations and ensuring smoother journey starts.
Panorama View incorporates a real street-level image of the chosen pickup point directly into the booking process.
Rather than relying solely on a map pin, passengers can select their pickup location and enter a 360-degree panoramic view of their exact meeting spot.
Whether it’s the entrance of a building, a landmark, or a street corner, having a dynamic visualization of your location simplifies identifying where to wait and enhances safety.
If street-level imagery is not available, the panorama icon will be absent, and passengers will see the pickup map as usual.
Recommended Pickup Points function behind the scenes to enhance accuracy even before a driver is assigned, guiding drivers to areas where passengers are easier to locate, thereby reducing unnecessary delays, missed pickups, and time spent searching for each other.
Should passengers or drivers need further clarification, they can still communicate via the in-app chat.
inDrive country representative, Ashif Black, states that these new features will help ease some of the pickup challenges that both drivers and passengers frequently encounter.
“The start of a ride sets the tone for the entire journey together, and being able to locate one another efficiently without delay ensures that the driver isn’t wasting time, which in turn affects their potential earnings, and that passengers aren’t delayed reaching their destination or stuck waiting longer than necessary in potentially unsafe areas,” explains Black.
“You know that big garage on the right?”
The launch addresses a challenge well-known to many South Africans, where individuals often rely on location points like landmarks, petrol stations, or prominent business names to clarify their whereabouts.
While this might be a unique South African approach to navigation, it may lead to confusion and even frustration for drivers who might be unfamiliar with the area.
inDrive aims to reduce the time passengers spend waiting outside, minimize unnecessary communication between passengers and drivers, and help drivers spend less time driving around busy city blocks or navigating challenging access points by combining clearer visual information with more accurate pickup suggestions.
Beyond enhancing the pickup experience for passengers, improved accuracy in pickup points is also expected to enhance driver utilization over time.
As passengers set Point A more precisely and have a clearer understanding of exactly where they will be picked up, waiting times should reduce, allowing drivers to complete more trips each day and creating a smoother, more efficient experience for all.
“In major cities where people frequently meet at shopping centres, office parks, apartment complexes, and busy transport hubs with multiple entrances or pickup points within a small area, these features significantly streamline the pickup process,” adds Black.
In Johannesburg and Cape Town, passenger ride requests are primarily focused around significant shopping and business hubs.
In Johannesburg, Eastgate Shopping Centre leads in ride volume, followed by central Johannesburg, Jabulani Mall, and Braamfontein, while other major destinations like Mall of Africa and Sandton City also rank among the top pickup points.
In Cape Town, Liberty Promenade sees the highest ride volume, followed by central Cape Town, Zevenwacht Mall, and Canal Walk Shopping Centre, underscoring the significance of shopping centres and commercial hubs as key starting points for inDrive journeys.
“Since the beginning of a ride usually establishes the tone for the entire journey, assisting passengers and drivers in identifying the same meeting point before the trip starts makes those initial moments much more pleasant and straightforward for both sides,” concludes Black.
Panorama View and Recommended Pickup Points are now accessible to inDrive users in Johannesburg and Cape Town via the app, with plans for continued expansion as street-level imagery becomes more available in additional areas.
