Border Police at Oshoek Uncover Hidden Large Dagga Shipment in Tire Load.

Oshoek – Border police have successfully detected a large consignment of dagga hidden in a truck filled with tyres, traveling from neighbouring Eswatini to South Africa.

The articulated Volvo truck, carrying contraband worth an estimated R4 million, was apprehended at the Oshoek Port of Entry in Mpumalanga yesterday, Monday, 17 August 2026.

The cannabis, packed into 49 bags and wrapped in plastic, was found concealed among the tyres during a routine vehicle inspection at the border gate.

In response to the drug bust, Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise stated: “This successful interception of such a significant consignment highlights the commitment of our police personnel to maintain vigilance at our Ports of Entry.

“We recognize that traffickers frequently attempt to cross our borders into the province to execute their illicit activities.”

Lieutenant General Modise emphasized that uncovering this attempted smuggling of dagga from Eswatini into South Africa illustrates that “our strategy to tackle cross-border criminal activities is proving effective.”

The police have seized the truck and arrested the driver, who is expected to face charges related to dealing in dagga.
