New Father and Renowned Jockey Leandro Henrique, Age 27, Passes Away in Tragic Mid-Race Incident, Sending Shockwaves Through the Racing Community

The racing community is heartbroken following the tragic loss of celebrated jockey and new father, Leandro Henrique, who passed away at just 27 years old.

Henrique had been fighting for his life after sustaining injuries from a fall last Sunday.

Reports from various Brazilian media outlets confirm the sorrowful news of his death early Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred during the second race at Hipódromo da Gávea, the same track where Frankie Dettori rode his last race.

Last year, Henrique welcomed his first child into the world and made international headlines in June when he almost lost a race due to premature celebrations.

He began celebrating his victory approximately 50 yards before crossing the finish line in the Group 1 Grande Premio Brasil, the country’s top race.

Unbeknownst to him, a rival horse was closing in, and he later reflected on getting “caught up in the moment,” managing to secure the win by a mere nose.

In a reflective moment, he expressed: “I’m at a loss for words. I’m in shock because of the finish.

“I didn’t see the horse on the inside. I was caught up in the moment and celebrating because winning this race has been a dream of mine, especially with my daughter on the way.

“I am very happy but also tremendously relieved.

“I want to extend my apologies to the trainer and the owners – I assure you that this will never happen again.”
