Banyana’s Crucial Play-Off Matchup Evaluated by Ellis as Last Opportunity to Qualify for World Cup

As Banyana Banyana prepares to face Chinese Taipei, Ecuador, and Uzbekistan in the opening round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Play-Off Tournament, head coach Desiree Ellis remains hopeful that South Africa can clinch a World Cup berth with a powerful performance in their first match.

The draw occurred at FIFA’s Zurich headquarters in Switzerland on Thursday, with the matches scheduled for the international window from November 24 to December 5, 2026, at a location that is yet to be finalized.

In this draw, South Africa and Ghana represented CAF, while Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan hailed from the AFC, Ecuador from CONMEBOL, and Papua New Guinea from the OFC.

“This draw presents a challenge, but it’s one we can overcome if we commence strongly. The opening game is vital; a poor start will complicate our efforts,” commented Ellis.

“I’ve consistently emphasized that there’s no room for error, and this situation requires even more from us, as it represents our final chance to qualify for the World Cup. The victory against Nigeria has definitely boosted the players’ morale, and they were eager to hear the results of the draw. I’m confident they are now looking forward to the forthcoming games.

“Now that we’ve identified our opponents, we can conduct a thorough analysis and prepare effectively.

“It’s noteworthy that we’ve faced Uzbekistan in the past, yet we haven’t played against Chinese Taipei or Ecuador. Staying focused on this stage of the tournament is crucial; we shouldn’t look too far ahead, but I believe we can achieve a top-two finish.

“Moreover, we are fortunate that all our players will gain significant experience on the pitch. We also have an Olympic qualifying match scheduled for October, which will assist us in finalizing the squad for the play-offs.

“I cannot emphasize enough how critical the opening match will be, as by the second game, we’ll have a much clearer understanding of our standing.”

Only the leading two teams from this mini-tournament will progress to the final phase, scheduled for February next year. They will join four teams—one each from UEFA and CONMEBOL, along with two from CONCACAF.

The last three teams standing after the knockout stages will secure their place in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Africa’s Cameroon, Malawi, Algeria, and Morocco are among the 18 nations that have already qualified.
