Achieving Victory: Hotto Aims for MTN8 Final After Exciting First-Leg Triumph

Man of the Match Deon Hotto underscores that Orlando Pirates are well aware of what it takes to earn a place in yet another MTN8 final after his brilliant first-half goal secured a 1-0 first-leg semifinal victory against Sekhukhune United at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

The Namibian international teamed up effectively with versatile Zambian midfielder Ghampani Lungu before sending the ball rocketing into the net, leaving former Pirates goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi with no chance.

This win offers the defending champions a crucial edge ahead of the second leg at Orlando Stadium next weekend. However, with a Betway Premiership match against Babina Noko on Tuesday, Hotto acknowledges the strategic challenges that lie ahead.

“It’s quite rare to compete against the same team three times,” remarked Hotto.

“Yet we came here today and achieved what we set out to do. The next match is at the Arena, and we know our roles. We’ll simply take it one game at a time.”

Hotto has a special bond with the Wafa Wafa tournament, having won the trophy five times with the Buccaneers since joining the Soweto giants prior to their 2020/21 victory.

In light of the difficult conditions in Polokwane, the veteran praised his team’s tactical flexibility in navigating the limited space of the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium pitch.

“It was a tough match,” noted Hotto.

“They pressed us on a smaller pitch; their game plan was to tighten the play. Still, we have an outstanding technical team and a strong squad. We made effective use of the available space, and I netted my first goal in the MTN8. I’m thankful for that.

“I want to express my gratitude to the man above and acknowledge the support from my teammates and the coaching staff.”

Pirates will take on Sekhukhune at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night in the league before facing them again in the crucial second leg on Sunday.
