Two more Emfuleni Municipality staff members caught by PKTT for illegal power reconnections

Johannesburg – The Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has apprehended two additional individuals in connection with a case involving alleged fraud, theft, and the tampering of essential infrastructure at the Emfuleni Local Municipality.

Initial investigations have revealed that the suspects are accused of running a scheme where they falsely portrayed themselves as authorized officials to municipal clients, claiming they could restore electricity services that had been disconnected by the municipality.

Clients were reportedly directed to deposit various sums directly into the suspects’ bank accounts in exchange for the illicit reconnection of electricity services.

Moreover, the suspects are alleged to have unlawfully reconnected electricity supplies without the municipality’s permission, leading to unauthorized electricity usage and financial losses for the local authority.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe stated that the two suspects were arrested this morning, Sunday 23 August 2026, during an operation conducted in Vanderbijlpark.

“Both suspects are employees linked to the municipality’s Revenue and Electricity Department,” Brigadier Mathe mentioned.

“With these arrests, the total number of individuals apprehended in connection with this investigation has reached seven.”

On Friday, 21 August 2026, five members of the Emfuleni Local Municipality were also arrested for fraud, theft, and tampering with essential infrastructure.

All seven suspects are scheduled to appear before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 August 2026.
