Top Cyclist Tadej Pogacar has Surgery After Severe Crash, Withdraws from Vuelta a España

TADEJ POGACAR is set to have surgery on his broken collarbone after sustaining multiple injuries in a crash that forced him to withdraw from the Vuelta a Espana.

The 27-year-old Slovenian exited the cycling event following a serious incident during stage eight.

According to the medical team at UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Pogacar suffered a concussion, a “stable” neck fracture, various abrasions, and the break in his left collarbone.

The world’s top cyclist fell while positioned in the midst of the peloton with 32 kilometers left before the finish line in Xeraco.

Pogacar, who aimed to sweep all three Grand Tours, suffered serious cuts and abrasions to his left shoulder and the left side of his face during the incident.

The crash occurred after he collided with another cyclist, causing him to lose control of his handlebars.

Despite his attempts to remount his bike after a brief pause, with teammates awaiting his return, Pogacar cried out “no” and winced in pain as he reached for his bicycle.

The five-time Tour de France champion was transported in an ambulance, his arm secured in a sling.

This marks the first time he has had to withdraw from a significant race.

The incident raises questions about his participation in the upcoming Road Cycling World Championships scheduled in Montreal, Canada.

The UAE Team Emirates-XRG star was leading the race, having achieved three stage victories in just six days.

Frenchman Bryan Coquard claimed victory in the 171-kilometer stage, while Spaniard Enric Mas has now taken over as the new General Classification leader.

Movistar’s Mas, 31, had been trailing Pogacar, the winner of the 2024 Giro d’Italia, by three minutes and 50 seconds.

Coquard, representing the Cofidis team, expressed his sentiments: “It’s truly unfortunate. I wish him a swift recovery.

“There are still several races to come, and I hope he will be in great shape for them.”
