Lewis-Skelly’s Journey from Arsenal Standoff and World Cup Exclusion to England Midfield Aspirations: A Message for Thomas Tuchel

Myles Lewis-Skelly has experienced a remarkable four months, even without participating in the World Cup.

The Arsenal prodigy made his initial Premier League start in midfield for his boyhood club in May.

Fast forward to Saturday night, and the 20-year-old found himself in midfield for his national side against the reigning world champions.

With club teammate Declan Rice unavailable due to fitness concerns, Lewis-Skelly was chosen over Alex Scott to team up with Elliot Anderson.

He initially appeared nervous against the tough Spanish side, but who among the England players didn’t?

Like his teammates, he soon settled in and exhibited a comfortable presence against one of the top international teams.

This marks a significant turnaround for the young Londoner, who spent much of the previous season sidelined under Mikel Arteta.

Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie were preferred over the then-teenager at left-back, while a spot in his desired central midfield seemed beyond reach.

A summer transfer seemed possible when he faced exclusion mid-season.

However, with Martin Zubimendi struggling, Lewis-Skelly was recalled to assist Arsenal in their pursuit of their first title in 22 years.

After months of training in midfield, following stints as a No6 and No8 in the Gunners’ academy, he made his debut there in a 3-0 win against Fulham on May 2.

Since then, he has continued to excel.

Lewis-Skelly was impressive during the Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid and stood out in the final, which Paris Saint-Germain won on penalties.

Though it was too late for a World Cup selection, Thomas Tuchel has always held a positive view of the young prospect.

Playing at left-back, Lewis-Skelly scored the inaugural goal of the Tuchel era in a 2-0 victory over Albania in March 2025.

Therefore, it was no surprise when the German coach included the versatile midfielder in his lineup after his stellar start to the Premier League season.

Zubimendi has been on the sidelines as Lewis-Skelly has taken charge of the midfield.

This pattern persisted again as Zubimendi was named on the bench for Luis de la Fuente’s reigning Euros and World Cup champions.

Lewis-Skelly’s initial notable contribution was a shaky pass that went directly to Marc Cucurella, who advanced into the box and earned a corner after a deflection.

While this wasn’t his best effort, it coincided with several first-half errors from England, involving Elliot Anderson, Jarell Quansah, and prominently Marc Guehi, who played a crucial role in Lamine Yamal’s opening goal.

Despite the early blunder, Lewis-Skelly began to assert his influence in midfield, guiding teammates on positioning and adeptly receiving passes in tight situations.

He occasionally dropped back to form a back three with the center-backs and pressed forward to mark Rodri during Spain’s goal-kicks.

A highlight in the first half occurred when he surged forward, brushing aside 2024 Ballon D’Or winner Rodri, nearly earning a penalty after being fouled by Pau Cubars while advancing into the box.

However, he seemed hesitant when up against this year’s Ballon D’Or contender Yamal just before halftime.

After the break, MLS exuded more confidence, skillfully controlling a high ball and almost setting up Bukayo Saka, who was stopped by a last-ditch tackle.

He attempted a long shot just before being substituted for James Garner; unfortunately, it went straight to Unai Simon.

Facing Spain and their elite tiki-taka midfield is undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges.

While this performance might not have reached an A+, Lewis-Skelly did more than enough to meet the expectations.

England player ratings: Bellingham dominates midfield, Gordon proves his value to Tuchel, while Guehi falters & gives away a goal

MAYBE we wouldn’t have triumphed against them in the World Cup final after all…

Spain capitalized on England’s defensive errors, bouncing back from a 2-1 deficit after Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane had given the Three Lions the lead.

Lamine Yamal opened the scoring with one of the fastest goals ever conceded by England at Wembley, within a minute, taking advantage of a caught-off-guard Marc Guehi.

Some magic from Anthony Gordon lit up the LaLiga side before Harry Kane added England’s second just four minutes later, putting the hosts ahead. Unfortunately, everything went downhill from that point…

Kane, mirroring John Terry’s famous slip, saw his penalty hit the bar after being awarded a spot-kick, as Alex Baena and former rival Mikel Oyarzabal scored to seal the Three Lions’ fate.
