Reflecting on 50 Springbok Appearances: Wiese Contemplates the Bittersweet Milestone and Yearns for More Time
Jasper Wiese recognized that his 50th Test match did not go as he had hoped, but the Springbok No. 8 conveyed that reaching this milestone remains a deeply meaningful achievement.
Wiese marked his 50th appearance for South Africa during an exciting match against Australia, where the Springboks staged a comeback from a 25-point deficit, ultimately losing 42-38 in Perth on Sunday.
Despite the defeat, Wiese took a moment to reflect on the significance of hitting the half-century mark while wearing the iconic green and gold jersey.
“Representing your country even once is an incredible privilege, but doing so 50 times is something I can’t take all the credit for,” Wiese remarked.
“I feel fortunate to have accomplished this with an amazing group of teammates.”

“Even though we didn’t walk away with a win, I empathize with the players who had their moment on Sunday; it’s still a remarkable experience,” he added.
The Springboks exhibited incredible resilience in the game’s closing moments, turning what appeared to be a one-sided match into an exhilarating finish.
After starting 25 points down, South Africa rallied as Australia stumbled, even playing with just 11 players at one point. The Springboks closed the gap to a mere four points in the final quarter.
For Wiese, this late-game rally was a testament to the spirit and determination of the Springbok team.
“To go from trailing by 25 points to losing by just four in such a short period illustrates the character of this team,” he noted.
“We were pushing hard at the end, and if we had had just a few more minutes…” Wiese mused, contemplating what could have been.
Wiese acknowledged that while the loss is painful, it will also impart important lessons for the team moving forward.
“It’s always a gamble to say this, but I am truly proud of the team and the effort they have shown,” he shared.
“The last 15 minutes highlighted how special this team is.
“We picked up some crucial insights. While we always strive to win while learning, sometimes a loss serves as not just a setback but also a necessary experience.”
Having recently defeated the All Blacks to secure the title of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, with the Nations Championship on the horizon, Wiese believes this setback could act as additional motivation for the Springboks.
“Losing this match certainly stings,” Wiese acknowledged.
“I’m confident that our determination will strengthen. Everyone in this squad is committed to giving their best for South Africa and the jersey.
“I genuinely believe we will come back from this stronger than ever.”
