Sergeant Shoots Driver, Assaults Teen Girl, and Commits Suicide

Polokwane – A shocking series of events unfolded when a police sergeant fatally shot a 32-year-old male driver before later assaulting a 14-year-old girl, culminating in him taking his own life.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the sergeant ended his life at his home in Ga-Masha, Sekhukhune District, on Sunday, September 27, 2026.

It is alleged that the police sergeant, based at the Mecklenburg Police Station, was traversing a narrow road when he confronted another driver.

“A confrontation reportedly took place between the two individuals, leading to the police officer allegedly using his service weapon to shoot the driver before fleeing the scene,” Colonel Ledwaba explained.

Authorities were made aware of the shooting incident at Ga-Mashamothane around 15:30.

“Officers arrived on the scene to discover a 32-year-old man on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds,” Colonel Ledwaba stated.

“Emergency Medical Services pronounced him dead at the location.”

“Following the incident, the suspect allegedly returned to his residence with a 14-year-old girl who was with him.

“Initial reports suggest that the young girl was subjected to rape at his home.

“Shortly thereafter, it is alleged that the suspect directed his service weapon at himself and fatally shot himself.”

Colonel Ledwaba indicated that police in Tubatse, under the Sekhukhune District, have initiated investigations into the charges of murder and rape, alongside an inquest.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been informed and will oversee the ongoing investigation.

In response to these distressing events, Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, remarked: “Police officers are given firearms with the responsibility to uphold and enforce the law.

“When a member is suspected of breaching the law, a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances must take place, followed by the necessary proceedings.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and assure the affected minor that she will be provided with the support she needs.”

Investigations into the details surrounding these incidents are still ongoing.
