Baartman Unveils Chiefs’ Impressive Comeback Led by Da Cruz

Luke Baartman, a forward for Kaizer Chiefs, is determined to maintain his spot in the lineup at Naturena after a strong beginning to the season under coach Fernando Da Cruz.

The 20-year-old has been part of every match for the Chiefs this season, scoring one goal and earning a Man of the Match accolade.

Baartman stresses that his commitment lies in putting forth the necessary effort to secure consistent playing time, as he believes that regular participation can boost his chances of representing South Africa.

“I wouldn’t say everything is simply good. Rather, I consider it a fantastic start for me so far, being involved in all league matches,” he stated.

“At this point, it’s all about working diligently and getting more game time. If you’re not on the pitch, getting called up seems quite unlikely.”

“If you’re not getting any playing time, it’s unlikely you’ll be called up. Therefore, my priority is to keep working hard, continue playing, and ensure I get more game minutes.”

Baartman’s situation has significantly improved this season after facing difficulties in earning consistent playtime last season under coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze.

Even in good health, the Cape Town Spurs academy graduate only made seven appearances last season, with the frustration of being substituted on after the 80th minute in every match.

However, since Da Cruz took over, Baartman has solidified his place in the Chiefs’ roster, allowing him to gain confidence and develop through steady competitive play.

His progress has not gone unnoticed on the international stage, and he is currently a member of the South Africa U23 national team.

The U23 team is preparing to compete against Algeria in two international friendlies, with the first scheduled for Thursday at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.

These matches are part of South Africa’s preparations for the qualifiers for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, which will take place in the United States from July 14 to July 30, 2028.

Baartman believes that representing his country could be a crucial milestone in his development and may have a considerable impact on his career.

“Indeed, it’s always an honor to play for your country, to stand in for them,” he stated.

“Playing for your national team is a monumental experience, and it can genuinely alter the course of your career.”

“Therefore, my aim is to keep working hard and improving.”
